Documenting the Collection
- Photographing each item.
- Description of each item. Each item will be described in the following way
- Taxonomy number from the hobby (i.e., Consolidated Design number for glass pin types, Universal Style Chart for porcelain pin-types, M-number for multiparts)
- Marking
- Type of marking (embossing, incuse, recess-embossing, glaze resist, sand blasting, underglaze ink stamp)
- Location of mark
- Mold characteristics (e.g, Mold Line over Dome)
- Base characteristics (e.g., existence of drip points, indication of where the firing rest is on porcelain pieces)
- Color
- Dimensions (if not already part of the hobby taxonomy)
- Industry name (e.g,, “signal,” or “Emily knob,”)
- Condition
- Museum reference number
- Compilation of an electronic data base available online on the NIA web site
Consulting on Acquisitions
- What to acquire (Link to example)
- Advising on the expected cost of acquisitions
- Soliciting donations of insulators and related items
- Advising on where to acquire insulators and related items
- Providing a contact person to assist with the search for an item
- Advice on authentication
