New Zealand Insulators (NZI) originated as the Temuka Pottery which originated from William Hoare's brickworks in 1894. The first insulators were made around 1917 or 1918 after the discovery of a deposit of clay suitable for insulator manufacture. In 1924 the company became New Zealand Insulators Inc. During World War II, output of insulators soared and millions of these were exported to India. Many improvements were made when the New Zealand Government wanted communication insulators made to the British Standard specification. The Temuka plant is still managing to survive in a shrinking market
