The Calcutta Pottery Works was set up in 1905 at 45, Tangra Road, Calcutta, but was not successful so a new company was incorporated as Bengal Potteries Ltd. in 1919. They produced toys, low voltage insulators and crockery. They employed around 600 workers,but fell ran into financial problems. In 1934 M.G. Bhagat (a well-known ceramist at the Gwalior Potteries in Delhi) along with a few associates, purchased controlling interest in the company and worked to expanded the products and modernize the equipment. Just before World War II some of the equipment was installed enabling increased production of insulators and crockery during the war including supplying products to Government Departments and the public at large. In the 1950s, G.K. Bhagat, who had received Masters Degree in Ceramic Engineering in the U.S.A., succeded M.G. Bhagat in running the company. The company remains in business today.
